I had the idea for this painting during a hike with my family to Rock City at Coopers Rock State Forest. I was drawn to the scene of a climber near the crest of an almost vertical rock wall. The steep edge of the cliff creates a strong diagonal that leads the eye toward the climber, making him the focal point of the composition. I changed the color of his jacket to red to make him stand out against the surrounding green foliage and emphasize his presence within the landscape.
